The anniversary X international Conference on Ophthalmology "East–West" will be held in Ufa on 6-7 June. It is the largest one on international composition among all medical forums held in the Republic of Bashkortostan and among ophthalmological conferences in the Russian Federation.

The Forum will be attended by more than 1,500 ophthalmologists from Russia, Great Britain, Germany, Switzerland, Cyprus, Turkey, India, Singapore, Japan, Latvia, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, as well as doctors of the African continent – Namibia, Ethiopia and Mozambique.

The Conference will be held a lecture session of leading scientists from the universities of Japan. Ophthalmologists from Turkey will conduct their two-day scientific session. Other well-known scientists of international renown will also have their personal lecture sessions. Each of the lecturers will present their concept in the treatment of eye diseases and share invaluable experience.

Delegations headed by leading domestic experts from special research institutes, heads of ophthalmological clinics, heads of departments of eye diseases of medical Universities of various cities of the Russian Federation will further enrich the scientific asset of the Forum.

The scientific program of the Conference will traditionally consist of sessions devoted to various problems of diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases. In addition to the plenary sessions, there will be satellite symposia, which will highlight some of the problems of treatment for a particular eye disease. In total, the conference program includes more than 100 reports. During the scientific meetings, ophthalmologists will have the opportunity to discuss the most important and pressing issues of clinical practice.

Short-term training courses (Wetlab) devoted to cataract phacoemulsification, intravitreal drug administration, treatment of corneal pathology are planned within the Conference for beginning ophthalmic surgeons.

The Conference will also be held online – ophthalmologists from different countries will have the opportunity to participate in the Forum in absentia.

The official languages of the Conference are English and Russian.

The Ufa Eye Research Institute is the leading ophthalmological institution of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Bashkortostan, providing advice and surgical care for almost all types of eye diseases. The Institute also carries out scientific, production and educational activities.

In recent years, the total number of operations has increased by 4.5 times, reaching 41 thousand in 2018, 17 thousand of which were cataract surgeries and 6 thousand were surgeries for retinal diseases. Nowadays, the Institute occupies a leading position in the country in the number of performed ophthalmic operations. Patients from all over Russia come to the Institute for surgical help: from Karelia and Crimea to Vladivostok and Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, as well as patients from the CIS countries (Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan, etc.) and abroad (China, Vietnam, etc.).

The Institute has about 500 employees, more than 100 of whom are doctors and researchers. The Institute has 4 polyclinics and 6 surgical departments, 3 scientific departments and several scientific laboratories.

The Ufa Eye Research Institute conducts joint research with Heidelberg University (Germany), London Imperial College (UK), Singapore Institute of Eye Diseases (Singapore), etc. Over the past 5 years, researchers of the Institute have published the results of their work in reputable international journals with a high impact factor, such as: The Lancet (impact factor – 53,25), Nature (41,58), Nature Genetics (27,12), International Journal of Epidemiology (8,36), American Journal of Ophthalmology (4,8), etc.
